Mysuru, known for its rich cultural heritage, faced challenge of plastic pollution due to improper disposal of non-recyclable plastic waste. To counter this Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) partnered with a local recycler (M/s. Jagruth Tech Private Limited) to repurpose non-recyclable plastic waste into eco-friendly products such as plastic tiles and paver blocks. These plastic tiles are used as interlocking tiles for pavements and laying footpaths. This made Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), first urban local body in Karnataka which earned an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) certificate for processing Category-III plastic waste.
Partnership with Local Recycler: MCC partnered with M/s. Jagruth Tech Private Limited for processing and safe disposal of non-reusable plastic waste by repurposing it into durable plastic tiles. MCC provided free land within the Sewage Waste Disposal Unit to the recycling company which served as a centralized hub for material collection, sorting, processing, and manufacturing plastic tiles from the collected plastic waste. Adopting Innovative solution: MCC recognised the potential of plastic tiles as more sustainable building material with lower costs compared to conventional cement tiles and therefore adopted them in various construction projects. Creating market demand for Plastic tiles: MCC created a market demand for these plastic tiles by using it in various municipal projects like paving footpaths and pedestrians.
First Urban Local Body in Karnataka to earn EPR certificates. More than 350 tons of plastic waste collected and channelized to plastic tiles manufacturing unit. About 100 tons of plastic tiles manufactured out of plastic waste.
Engaging with Recyclers: ULBs can partner with private agencies to leverage innovative technologies in waste management. Establishing Market Linkages: ULBs can create market demand for recycled products such as plastic tiles by partnering with local businesses, construction projects to ensure the large-scale usage of recycled products. Engaging with Aggregators: ULBs can engage with informal waste collectors and scrap dealers to optimise waste segregation, collection, and transportation of plastic waste to recycling facilities.
